How to Measure the Return on a Patient Video
"Is it working?" should be answered with data, not a hunch. The metrics worth tracking are clear.
In short: what do I need to know?
"Is it working?" should be answered with data, not a hunch. The metrics worth tracking are clear.
Data, Not Hunches
Judging a content investment with "I think it's working" is common but insufficient. Fortunately, the impact of medical video content produces measurable items.
The Primary Metric: Acceptance Rate
The clearest measure is the change in acceptance rate for the treatment the video is used in. The method is simple: compare the treatment-plan presentation / approval rate for the three months before you started using the video with the three months after.
For high-budget treatments, a single won case often covers the production cost — which is why measuring per treatment matters.
Secondary Metrics
- Consultation time: The average minutes a physician spends explaining the treatment.
- Information-driven calls: Number of post-discharge calls after a care video.
- Appointment cancellations: Preparation-related cancellations after a preparation video.
- International conversion: Time from first contact to deposit.
Digital Metrics
On the website: video view rate, time on page and form submissions from that page. On social media: watch time (the most critical), saves and shares — far more meaningful than likes.
The Measurement Trap
Looking at a single metric misleads. For example, if views are high but acceptance does not change, the video may be reaching the wrong audience or addressing the wrong objection. Read the metrics together.
Infrastructure for Measurement
Without analytics set up, there is no measurement. A basic analytics tool installed on your website and form submissions defined as goals are prerequisites for this evaluation.
